ST. HELENA

In St. Helena whale sharks are known locally as “Bone sharks”.

They have migrated to the tiny, remote Island of St. Helena for generations.

The sharks’ strong links to the maritime heritage here led to the Bone shark being declared one of  ‘The Seven Wonders of St. Helena’.

Just as the whale shark is important to the people of St Helena, St Helena is also important to the whale shark. It is known to be the only location in the world where mature male and female sharks gather in equal numbers, and there is evidence that the Marine Protected Area serves not only as a feeding location, but also a breeding ground for these sharks.
