MADAGASCAR

In Madagascar whale sharks are under the pressures from the tourism industry and they also face the additional pressures of by-catch and shark finning.

The island of Nosy Be, off northwest Madagascar is a hotspot for whale sharks. Each year between September and December, juvenile whale sharks gather here to feed.

When feeding on shoals of baitfish near the surface, the whale sharks are especially vulnerable to boat strikes.

Tourist encounters WHERE BEST PRACTICES ARE NOT FOLLOWED can cause the whale sharks to stop feeding, interrupting a key phase in their growth and survival.
